Farmikko energy wood

Vad är en energiklo och vad används den till?

An energy grapple is a hydraulic tool specially designed for efficient handling of energy wood and small trees. Unlike conventional timber grapples, energy grapples can both cut trees and delimb them, making it a versatile tool for forestry and landscape maintenance. Energy grapples are primarily used for first thinning, edge clearing, and park and garden work.

What is an energy grapple and how does it work?

An energy grapple is a hydraulically driven specialized tool designed to handle energy wood and small trees efficiently. It differs significantly from conventional timber grapples in that it can cut trees, while timber grapples are only intended for loading already delimbed logs. Additionally, energy grapples can be rotated vertically or horizontally depending on the work situation.

Accumulating energy grapples can handle multiple stems simultaneously using grip jaws. It’s important to note that accumulation capability is not a standard function on all energy grapples on the market.

Important Note: Delimbing is a separate function that is not available on all energy grapples. In Farmikko energy grapples, delimbing is available.

Farmikko energy grapple’s delimbing process works as follows: the grapple takes a loose grip around the tree’s base, after which the grapple is lifted upward along the stem to the desired height. The delimbing blades in the grapple cut off the branches growing on the stem. Then the tree is cut at the desired height, the branchy top is moved to the pile of undelimbed trees, and the delimbed stem is moved to the pile of delimbed trees.

Structurally, quality energy grapples are manufactured from durable materials such as SSAB’s Hardox steel. This wear-resistant steel guarantees long service life even under demanding conditions. Important components include grip jaws, delimbing blades, hydraulic cylinders, and attachment mechanism to the base machine.

What are energy grapples used for and who are they suitable for?

Energy grapple applications are versatile and cover a broad spectrum of forestry work. Tree felling succeeds efficiently both in forestland and in urban areas. The grapple is suitable for mounting on various base machines such as tractors, forest machines, work machines, and trucks, making it a flexible tool for different operating environments.

The most common applications for energy grapples:

  • First thinnings in young forests
  • Clearing of field boundaries and roadsides
  • Maintenance of yard and park areas
  • Removal of bushes and small trees
  • Clearing of hawthorn hedges and similar vegetation
  • Clearing under power lines

Who Benefits Most from Energy Grapples?

Typical users of energy grapples are forest owners, agricultural entrepreneurs, contractors, and municipal sector operators. For forest owners, the grapple offers the opportunity to manage their forests independently, while contractors benefit from its efficiency in commercial forestry work.

Benefits that energy grapples provide to different user groups:

  • Forest owners: Independent forest management and cost savings
  • Agricultural entrepreneurs: Efficient maintenance of field boundaries
  • Contractors: Fast work and versatile application possibilities
  • Municipalities: Safe and efficient maintenance of green areas

How to choose the right energy grapple for your needs?

Choosing the right energy grapple is based on several factors, the most important being the type and size of the base machine, crane capacity, and planned applications. Before making a purchase decision, one should realistically assess what work will be performed with the grapple.

Energy Grapple Size Suitability Typical Base Machine
Small energy grapple Forest management, road and field boundaries, park areas Small tractor, small forest machine
Medium energy grapple Forest management, road and field boundaries, park areas Agricultural tractor, forest machine
Large energy grapple Forest management, road and field boundaries, park areas Forest machine, large agricultural tractor, truck

Installation Advantage: Easy installation is a significant selection criterion. Farmikko’s energy grapples can be mounted on both older and newer equipment without extra hydraulic lines or electrical cables. This saves time and money in the installation phase and enables easy transfer of the grapple from one machine to another.

Technical characteristics to consider are cutting capacity, accumulation capacity, loading characteristics, and hydraulic requirements. It’s important to note that not all energy grapples on the market have delimbing and accumulation capabilities.
